Real or True Information

BOOZE: intoxicating drink; hard liquor

[Thirteen kindergarteners gather in a circle on the rug]

Teacher: We’ve been reading non-fiction books.  Who can tell me what a non-fiction book is?

Girl: A book that is true.

Teacher: That’s right.  Non-fiction books give the reader real or true information.  Who can give me an example of something that a non-fiction book might be about?

[One hand is raised.  The teacher waits for others but, seeing none, calls on the willing.]

Boy: Beer.  [pregnant pause]  Or, booze.

Teacher: That’s one idea.  Does anyone have another idea of what a non-fiction book might be about?

[Silence….except for the room mother taking exaggerated breaths to keep from laughing.]
